Marmaduke High School Art Club

By Whitney Morris

Over ninety Art Club members took a trip to the Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. In spite of the rain, the students still seemed to enjoy themselves. The Master Metalsmith for 2009 wasElizabeth Brim, who adds a very girly touch to all of her work. She includes metal pillows and shoes in her collection. She is a blacksmith and an instructor at Penland School of Crafts in Penland, North Carolina.

Jessica Colter commented on her view of the trip saying, “It was fun, real fun. My favorite part was when they showed the us how to bend metal,” Colter said. I wish it had not rained so I could observe the structures that were set up outside,”

“It was fun to look at the art,” commended Logan Kennedy. Kennedy loved how they made a hook out of a piece of metal. Kennedy agreed with Colter when it came to the rain issue.

In contrast to others, Tessa Allison said the drive was too long for her to want to go back but she enjoyed the museum itself. Allison really liked when they made the hook. “I learned that it’s hard to make metal pillows,” Allison stated. “I thought the rain made it funny because everyone was freaking out about their hair,” she added.

“I had a blast!” Davey Taylor shared. He liked all of the pieces and even the rain. Davey mentioned that he learned metal is really tough. “It was a really fun trip. Who doesn’t like rain?”

Though it rained and made things a bit difficult, the Art Club seemed to still have fun and learn something new!
